Compass Navigator Updates
Using Key Digital’s Compass Navigator™ software, programming a Compass Control® device is an intuitive step by step process utilizing simple ‘drag and drop’ gestures. This is why we constantly look to update our software to meet your needs and make your installations easier!

Compass Control is now introducing a modular programming build. Although programming the system using the new modular layout and connectivity mapping is simplistic for single zone applications, the following notes are intended to provide insight on the behind-the-scenes workings to enable non-traditional use of the programming method. Displayed below are the latest updates to Compass Navigator:

*These updates may be better understood by C3 Certified Programmers

Advanced Modular System Notes:
  • Device
    • 3 properties:
      • Number of Inputs (according to manager properties)
        • Can be removed/de-selected from device properties in Navigator
        • Ie. TV with 16 input connections (HDMI 1,2,3, Component, Composite, PC, USB, Smart (internal), etc…
      • Number of Outputs (according to manager properties)
        • Ie. AVR with single zone = 1 output
        • 4x4 Matrix = 4 outputs
      • Typical source device (ie Blu-Ray) should be set to 0 outputdModule
  • Modules
    • What is module?
      • Combination of driver, graphic interface, and (optional) compiled bi-directional driver all in 1 file
    • Modular projects have file extension .mod
    • For additional / separate control panels, add sub-devices (aka sub-page)
  • Building Modular Based Project
    • Add Controllers (ipad & MC)
    • Add Modules
      • Local Module = Main library of modules
      • KD Server Module (Future) = Downloadable form KD Server
      • User Module = Created by programmer
    • Controlling Flow
      • Adding devices to Control Tree automatically create pages populated with module graphics
    • Assign Zones
      • Add zones to system
    • Zone Construction
      • Zone’s connectivity tree
    • Compile Project – adds variables, auto-events, etc.  Must be re-compiled if changes are made, ie device name is changed
    • File à Customize Project (optional) = the only way to edit modular project
      • Cannot return to modular project build after customizing project
      • If edited module is desired, best to edit module itself before adding to project (not possible for KD supplied modules)
  • Creating Custom Module
    • Navigator à New à Create New Module
    • Select “Default Device” on System Design tree
    • Select “Change Library” button in Properties Window in order to change the device library / code-set
  • Auto-Created Variables
    • Storage for automatically created events and actions which are called when GUI is navigated/manipulated
  • iOS Controller properties
    • Auto-switching (applies to all iPads in system)
      • Means all necessary commands are automatically added according to Zone Construction tree
  • Modular System Pages
    • If automation system, pages are multi-purpose, with a single page for each sub-device.  Controlled by “moduleDeviceID” and/or “ModuleDeviceName” variables
    • Types:
      • Main – an empty page is added for each device / sub-device
        • Module property must be applied and corresponding device selected
      • Remote – the control panel for each device type
        • Module and Remote property must be applied and corresponding device selected
    • Page Events & Actions available
      • Show – when entering page
      • Remove – when leaving page
      • Timer – add repeat to set event intervals and occur many times
    • Device Properties
      • Category – can be unique for each sub-device.
        • Ie.  HAI device can have lighting, security, audio, climate sub-devices
      • Device Module Icon – automatically adds image icon to 2nd menu column.  Should fit aspect ratio
      • Visible Module Page – Device is visible / selectable in Zone Device Panel
        • Ie matrix switcher may not want to be visible in Zone Device  Panel.  Can be de-selected
      • Output Volume
        • Corresponds with Zone Video Volume Control and Audio Volume control property setting
          • Controlling by audio device (ie matrix, multi-zone, AVR, etc) or by television
      • Volume Up/Down – no discrete level set, just volume increase / decrease.  Removes slider
      • Channel Receiver – Corresponds with zone’s properties.  cable box or television changes channel
    • Main_Page
      • RightNavigate_Grp
        • Power button – makes power group visible with options of zone power, whole house, device, and lights.  Button’s E&A are customizable
    • MenuBar Variables
      • With # - Project properties
        • Value generated once by compiling project
          • ZoneName – array created according to zone tree
          • DeviceName – sub device – ie thermostat 1, thermostat 2
            • Initial Value property shows list with numerical assignment for each sub device
          • controlDeviceName – device / system name – ie aprilaire
          • DeviceFavorite – corresponds with device property settings
          • DeviceIsVolume – corresponds with device property settings
          • DeviceIsReceiver – corresponds with device property settings
          • ZoneVideoList – applies list mask for zone to show appropriate device according to activity.  Must be closed with “,”
          • Zone_AudioVControl – corresponds with zone properties
          • ActivityZoneList - applies list mask for selectable activities to show appropriate activities according zone property.  Must be closed with “,”
      • Without #
        • Related to current status of system as manipulated in iOS device
          • CurrentZone – set by pressing name in ZoneDevice Menu
          • SelectedZone – FUTURE use … value currently set by CurrentZone value
          • PopUpTimer – on iPad – PopUpPower panel.  On iPod/iPhone for ZoneDeviceMenu.  Default is 16 seconds
          • PopUpState – which popup menu is visible
          • Booleans – Place for E&A Macros for on / off.  Value Add +1 for toggle value of Boolean variables.  Editable only thru “Customize Project”

Compass Control Customer Spotlight
Our friends at @ Home Electric did an amazing Compass Control install using their own custom GUI for the new Famoso Neopolitan Pizzaria in Fort McMurray, Alberta.
This system provides control for all 6 TV's located throughout the restaurant, with access to 4 video receivers using a Key Digital KD-8x8CS and two KD-MC2500's. The distributed audio feed is supplied from one of the extra outputs on the 8x8 through a KD-HDDA1x1Pro, allowing the flexibility to select audio sources from any of the video receivers, or the streaming audio from a network source. The interface was designed and branded specifically for Famoso so that the iPad fits right in when displayed prominently on the front counter alongside of menus and other corporate material.
