Q: What does a Video Switcher do?
A:

A Switcher is used to select one of “N” video signals, where “N” is the number of Switcher Inputs, and use the selected signal to drive a monitor or display. Both video and audio may be switched. The signals should be switched without any signal degradation. There are essentially two kinds of Switchers: a “Switcher” and a “Matrix Switcher”. A Switcher has multiple Inputs, but typically only one output. A Matrix Switcher has multiple Inputs and independent Outputs, and you can switch any of these inputs to any one of the outputs. In both types of Switchers, the Inputs formats typically must all be the same, and the output format(s) is the same as the common input format.

Q: Can you show me pictorially how a Switcher operates?
A:

See the Switcher examples below – the first is for a basic “Switcher” and the second is for a “Matrix Switcher”:

  • Example of a “4x1 Switcher”, where Video Source #1 (of a possible 4 Inputs) is switched to the Output for display:
    • Use a SWITCHER in a wide range of applications where a display is fed by multiple video / audio sources
      4: VCR
  • Example of an “8x3 Matrix Switcher”:
    • An “8x3” Matrix Switcher:
Select Video Source #1 to Display A
Select Video Source #7 to Display B
Select Video Source #3 to Display C

Q: So, why might I need a Switcher in my installation application?
A:

For installations where you have a variety of HD and SD input sources, you’ll need to select specific inputs and feed them to one or more specific outputs, such as the display, with a video Switcher. You’ll want to feel confident that the switcher introduces little or no degradation to your signals.

  • In some installation applications, you may have more than a handful of HD and SD input sources, like Set Top Boxes, DVD players, and video game players...
  • The video sources can come in a variety of formats and standards, like HD, SD, Component Video (YPbPr), or VGA (RGBHV); you may have analog or digital audio...
  • Your installation application may include several different types of output displays, like Plasma, LCOS, D-ILA, DLP, LCD, and CRT projectors, as well as HDTV and SDTV television monitors...
  • You may want to select specific inputs and feed them to specific output displays, perhaps by remote control...

Then you’ll need to have the right, flexible Switcher to get the job done, like those uniquely offered by KEY DIGITAL SYSTEMS. Our switchers produce crystal-clear images which do not harm your input signals, and can be daisy chained to accommodate future expansion requirements. Let us help you choose exactly the right switcher for your specific installation application.
